WHY 3LC?
Three-Legged Crow refers to the mythic bird present in the folklore of many East Asian tea-growing countries, representing the sun and divine guidance. How much of this folklore was developed and passed down around tables just like ours by millions of people sharing tea, and how many more stories continue to be told generations later in the same way? Three-Legged Crow recognizes storytelling as inseparable from tea, and aims to create spaces for these stories to unfold.
Tea and storytelling also happen to be the passions of Three-Legged Crow founder Grant Kettering. In 2019, drawn to the way in which stories are inextricable from tea, they fell in love with gong fu cha. Grant learned more about the style from So-Han Fan, the owner of West China Tea, and became further involved in the Chicago tea community. From this community, the Chicago Tea Collective developed, and became an opportunity for pouring tea and for mutual learning, ultimately filling that need for three years.
Now, Three-Legged Crow will continue that crucial work of community-building and education shaped around tea. Grant first learned about gong fu cha through an illuminating tea service, and hopes to organize a space where others can have similar experiences as well as build community. We know that there is always more to learn and experience, and Three-Legged Crow aims to be a welcoming space to do just that – regardless of how much tea experience you sit down at the table with.
